Rootstock

One of the most valued pears of the 18thC and still esteemed in the 19thC. A classic winter dessert pear historically revered as a first-rate fruit across northern orchards and once widely planted in the Carse of Gowrie. It has a red blush over a yellow skin covered in grey russet patches. White flesh, crisp to melting; sweet-sharp, quite succulent and boldly flavoured. with intense spicy fragrance. It ripens mid to late October and is said to keep till March if stored correctly (Joan Morgan 'The Book of Pears'). This variety was first recorded in in 1675 at Luzarches in Franse where it is known as Chaumontel.

Please note: A stake and tie are required for all bare-root trees. We recommend a 50mm x 1500mm machine rounded wooden stake with a rubber tree tie for best results. These are available in the online shop under sundries
